Press Release: Ruby Powers Receives the 2019 Impact Award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | Wednesday, September 18, 2019

Ruby Powers Honored for Pro Bono Work on Behalf of Detained Immigrants with Health Needs

HOUSTON, TX- On September 20, 2019, Ruby Powers will be honored alongside Ayuda Familias and Dr. Kate Sugarman to receive the 2019 Impact Award, presented by the National Center for Medical-Legal Partnership, for her leadership and legal contributions to the families affected by family separation.

In 2018, in the midst of family separation crisis and the administration’s “Zero Tolerance” policy, Ruby Powers and her firm advocated on behalf of more than 6 clients who had been detained and displaced from their children and other family members across the country. Powers Law Group attorneys and staff worked tirelessly to reunite families and to provide them with both the educational and legal resources needed for temporary immigration relief.

Such was the outpouring of support that Powers received for her advocacy that she and other allies founded Ayuda Familias, an interdisciplinary organization that works to integrate health and legal needs for immigrants regardless of their status.

Aside from advocating and taking on these clients cases pro bono, Ruby Powers also spoke on family separation extensively to journalists, news outlets, and international media organizations –many of whom were often shut out of detention centers. By doing so, Ruby Powers brought to light family separation and showcased it to millions of Americans across the country, creating networks of immigration attorneys, translators, and advocates, to band together to help as many immigrants as possible.

As an immigration attorney Ruby Powers has also partnered with countless organizations on both a local and national level including Ayuda Familias, RAICES, Angry Tias and Abuelitas, the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the Houston Immigration Legal Services Collaborative, and Immigrant Families Together. Through these organizations, hundreds of individuals have been able to be reunited with their families and to find experienced immigration services that they otherwise would not have been able to receive.

Powers Law Group along with Ruby Powers is honored to receive this award from the National Center for Medical-Legal Partnership on behalf all of the clients and reunited families that resulted from their pro bono work. We appreciate all of the organizations that continue to fight for immigration injustices and thank all of the organizations that have provided their countless time, talent, and resources.
